According to the accession records, this shako was worn by the donor during his service with the 7th Regiment, National Guard New York (1918-1931). His uniform coat, trousers, epaulets, and belt are also in the N-YHS Collection.
DescriptionBlack wool felt shako with bell crown and black patent leather visor and trim; gilded metal front insignia with "7" in red enamel at center of circular medallion flanked by laurel branches and surmounted by a grenade; button with crossed cannon in relief and attached hooks from which metal scale chin strap with black leather backing is suspended; braided white cord draped in front and back; hole for pompon reinforced with metal grommet (pompon missing); black vinyl(?) half lining with lacing.Markingsrelief/intaglio: on front insignia: "PRO / PATRIA / ET GLORIA / 7"
