DescriptionBlack wool felt shako with black patent leather top and trim; angled cylindrical crown with gilded metal insignia of the 71th Regiment, N.G.S.N.Y., attached to front; small, somewhat rectangular visor; chin strap secured on either side with a button embossed with crossed muskets; white pompon mounted above insignia; black leather sweatband.
Markingsprinted paper label: affixed inside top of crown: "From / RIDABOCK & CO. / MANUFACTURERS OF AND DEALERS IN / UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENTS. / 112 FOURTH AVENUE / NEAR 12TH STREET. / NEW YORK." in relief: on front insignia plate: "NATIONAL / 71 / GUARD"
