Alexander Robertson’s views of the houses at Clermont were drawn when he traveled the Hudson River between Albany and New York City in 1796. The original building called "Clermont," located along the east bank of the Hudson River at Tivoli, Columbia County, New York, was erected in about 1730 by Robert Livingston, whose son, Judge Robert R. Livingsoton, married Margaret Beekman (1724-1800). Judge Livingston died in 1775 and left his wife with the management of the estate. In October 1777 the house was destroyed by the British, but it was rebuilt under Margaret Livingston's supervision in 1793.
