According to the accession records, this hat was worn either by the donor or by his father, Thomas Henry Barber (1844-1905), both of whom served in the National Guard New York.
DescriptionDress hat with blue wool felt crown with flat, circular top, light blue ribbon band edged with gold metallic cloth tape, and black patent leather visor; New York State seal embroidered in heavy gold metallic thread on front of hat; chin strap made of gold metallic cloth tape secured at either side by a button embossed with New York State seal.
Markingsembroidered: on front of hat: "EXCELSIOR" stamped in gold: on sweatband: "Russia Leather" maker's label: inside top of crown: "RIDABOCK & COMPANY / 112 FOURTH AVE / 2 DOORS BELOW 12TH ST / TRADE MARK / NEW YORK"
