A note found in the case says that this card case was a gift to Catherine Emeline Abeel from her father, as a going away gift when he left New York for Europe December 11, 1852. He returned May 1, 1853.
DescriptionNavy blue leather rectangular card case with rounded corners, gold scroll design bordering one side, the same design tooled on opposite side; when opened, the left side is lined with pink moiré and has a card compartment, the other side is lined with maroon velvet and has five leather loops securing personal accessories, including a needle, a pair of scissors, an ivory needlework awl, and a slender pencil, this section folds out to expose a notepad beneath.
