According to the donor, this clock was presented to Richard Harison (1747-1829), appointed by George Washington in 1789 as the first United States Attorney for the district of New York.
DescriptionRectangular Louis XVI mantel clock with glass case with gilded bronze frame mounted on white marble pedestal; circular white enamel dial set just above center of front of case and protected by convex glass window with gilt surround; front of case decorated with gilded bronze scrolling acanthus leaves, grape vines, eagle heads, laurels, a torch, and arrows, all surmounted by gilded bronze gallery; bronze pendulum with face at center of sunburst; visible escapement.
Markingsinscribed in black: on dial: "CHARLES BERTRAND" and "HGER DE L'ACADEMIE RLE DES SCIENCES"
