According to the accession records, this chair once belonged to Chester A. Arthur, twenty-first president of the United States (1881-1885). Arthur, who died in New York City in 1886, was associated with New York City and State throughout much of his professional life.
DescriptionWalnut armchair; back with leather-covered panel attached to oval frame set between ring-and-block-turned stiles that extend below seat rail and attach to diagonal side stretchers; turned and blocked arms; rounded seat with leather-covered panel nailed to top of rail; turned legs, two turned front stretchers, one plain, round stretcher at either side and one plain, round stretcher in back.
