According to the inscription on the handle, this cane was made from the ward room table of the flagship Lawrence, which was commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry during the War of 1812.
DescriptionWooden cane with straight, tapered shaft; gilded knob handle with inscriptions and engraved gothic decoration; top of handle engraved with ship, laurel wreath, eagle, shield, and flags; brass ferrule.
MarkingsEngraved on handle sides: "S.B.P. Higgins / from his friend / D.P. Dobbins. / This Cane was / Wrought from the / Ward Room / table of the / Flag Ship / Lawrence."; engraved on handle top: "We have met the enemy and they are ours. O.H.P. September 10th 1813."
