Francis Guy, one of the first artists in America to specialize in landscapes, depicted the financial crossroads of eighteenth-century New York. The Tontine Coffee House was built at the intersection of Wall and Water Streets in 1792-1793 and quickly became an important meeting place for merchants and traders to bargain for cargo from ships arriving at the East River wharves visible in the background.
