This watercolor is from the collection of Dr. Samuel Latham Mitchell (1764-1831), a prominent New Yorker and a founding member of The New-York Historical Society. It was recovered from the cellar of the second New York Almshouse of 1797. The perspective of Newport harbor was from the Old Stone Mill in the present Touro Park on Mill Street. The mill's erection--whether by the Norsemen or by the English settlers--was a subject of sporadic controversy.
