The subject was the son of Charles Cushing Wright and Lavinia Dorothy (Simons) Wright. He was born in Washington, D.C. His career as a wood engraver began in 1844, and in the years that followed he made numerous engravings for such popular periodicals as "Harper's Weekly" and "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Weekly." He was wounded while serving in the Civil War and died as a result of his injuries. His portrait was a gift to the Society from the artist, his grandson.
